According to Ramayana, Lord Rama spent three days on the banks of the ocean as he was waiting to reach Lanka. Rama has prayed and patiently waited for 3 days to find a solution. But he found that Samundra Raja did not come and discarded his request. And Samundra Raja did not even turned up to his prayers. his first two steps of Sama Dhana approach as outlined Dharma for an action, has not responded positively, he has become furious and exhibited the third dharma Bedham (means threatening); incidentally this could be the other side of normal human. But still the last action – Dhandam – has not been applied. The application of the dharma bedham itself was so frightening the whole universe, everyone pleaded for his calming down and as well the Samudra Raja came out and pleaded ignorance and given the solution.
However, it was decided that a bridge in the name of Ramar Palam (Bridge) was built; the rest of the part is well known to everybody. It is said that the arrow which he had kept ready to let loose on Samundra king was, at the behest of Samundra king let loose on the demons, who were residing under the Ocean. Thus, the arrow meant to destroy Samundra raja was diverted to destroy the enemies.
